Columbus County Park is a multiuse park that includes horseback trails, a sledding hill, disc golf, fishing, hiking trails and more. It is located near Richmond Michigan. The hiking trails are divided into three sections: a main section behind the nature center building. That trail runs along the river in an elongated loop. At the far end of it you can cross a road and enter another series of trails as well. From the main loop behind the nature center, there is a spot where the river is shallow and there you can take your hiking shoes off and walk across the river to another set of trails. Horse riders will also cross the river there to continue on the trails. I have observed that not all horses are equally keen on walking through water! On the trails you can pass through mixed hardwoods, prairie areas and some pines. The trails are nice. I have seen softshell turtles along the edge of the river. The prairie areas are good for shooting butterflies and dragonflies. There is some bird activity and I have photo'd cedar waxwings there before. However, wildlife photo'ing there is very limited compared to Kensington Metropark. It is still enjoyable to walk the trails. Despite my disagreement with the manager's idea of putting disc golf right within the prairie area and within the nature trails! Aldo Leopold would be beside himself or vindicated in what he said in his classic book: A Sand County Almanac which I highly recommend you read if you like nature and the outdoors. |
